陕西延安中学是1938年8月在党中央、毛主席关怀下，由陕甘宁边区政府直接创办的一所学校，也是我党亲自创办的第一所中学。1978年，被列为全国首批办好的重点中学，后被确定为省级重点中学和陕西省培养体育后备人才试点学校。现为延安市唯一隶属于市教育局的省级重点中学。2002年8月，按照“名校办民校”的精神，依托延安中学创办了延园中学，使办学规模扩大了一倍。两校现占地面积87531平方米，建筑面积42804平方米。有87个教学班，6000余名学生，280余名教职工。

    陕西延安中学是在老一辈无产阶级革命家、教育家、党和国家领导同志亲切关怀和精心培育下成长起来的。毛泽东曾为学校题词“光明在前”，周恩来题词“艰苦奋斗，努力学习”。1998年8月，江泽民同志为学校建校60周年题词“发扬革命传统，办好延安中学”。建国前，李鹏等党和国家领导人曾在校就读。建国后，蒙哥马利元帅、李政道博士、郭沫若先生等知名人士曾来校访问。延中校友遍布世界许多国家和地区，成为各行各业的骨干。

    时代赋予了延安中学革故鼎新、自强不息的性格和气质。近年来，在国家“科教兴国”战略指引下，延安中学坚持与时俱进，不断开拓创新，全面推行了体制上的校长负责制，用人上的教职工聘用制，管理上的岗位责任制，分配上的结构工资制的“四制”改革，形成了“改革创新、依法治校，民主管理、以德治校，从严治学、科研兴教”的办学和管理理念，学校各项工作均得到了长足发展。精神文明建设进一步加强，走出了以爱国主义教育为主线、以弘扬延安精神和养成教育为重点的德育教育新路子。尤其是一年一度的“走延安路、做延安人、铸延安魂”大型红色远足活动，受到了来延安调研的中央政治局委员、中宣部长刘云山同志的高度评价。办学条件明显改善，先后投资6000多万元，新建了2幢教学楼、3幢学生公寓楼、和综合办公楼、图书楼、电教楼及学生餐厅等，新增建筑面积26499平方米，拥有西北地区第一个环400米全塑胶操场，建起了现代化的理化生实验室和拥有600多台电脑、遍及每个工作点的校园网，多媒体进入每个教室，现代化教学设施建设跃上新台阶。教育教学质量稳步大幅提高。2005年1984名考生中上一本线827人，二本线以上1447人，一举实现了突破1400名大关的既定目标。三本线以上1911人，本科上线率达到96.32%。每年均有10多名学生达到清华、北大录取线，数百名学生被清华、北大、南大、复旦、浙大、人大、中科大、西交大、西工大等全国名校和“211”工程大学录取，为高等院校和地方经济建设输送了大批优秀人才。实施了资助贫困生“爱心工程”，学校每年出资20多万元，并动员师生和社会开明人士捐资，先后融资200多万元，资助贫困生4000多人次，确保了进入延中的每一位贫困生都能顺利完成高中学业。学校先后被命名为省、市级文明单位、文明校园，荣获全国中学贯彻《学校体育工作条例》优秀学校，陕西省爱国主义教育先进单位、知识分子工作先进单位、陕西省教育系统“创佳评差”最佳单位、延安市学校管理先进单位和教学质量特等奖等荣誉。

    Shaanxi Yan’an Middle School was founded in August ,1938 by the Shaanxi-Gansu-ningxia Border Region Government,thanks to the profound concern of Chairman Mao and the Party Central Committee.It is also the first school set up by our Party itself. Since 1978,it has been on the list of national key schools that should be run well in the first place. Now it is only provincial key school subordinate to Yan’an Education Bureau of the City of Yan’an.The scale of the school has doubled since August, 2002 with Yanyuan School attached to it.The latter one was set up on the basis of the idea of “a famous school leading a local school”.The school as a whole covers an area of 87,531 square metres. It is made up of 87 classes,with more than 6000 students and a faculty of over 280 teaching staff and workers.

    Shaanxi yan’an Middle School’s development to so good an extent owes a lot to the great concern and loving support of the veteran proletarian revolutionaries and outstanding educators of the older generations.Chairman Mao once inscribed to the school-“Lies ahead a bright future ”.The former permer premier Zhou Enlai once inscribed to the school-“Carry forward the fine traditions of our revolution and spare no efforts to manage well the school”.Before liberation,some former Party and state leaders once studied in this school ,with Li Peng as an example.After liberation,many distinguished figures such as Marshal Montgomery,Doctor Li Zhengdao,Mr.Guo Moruo paid their visits to the school.Graduates from this school are now in many regions and corners of the world and have turned out to be the backbones in their occupations.
